Sarah Lucas

Community Board Member, coach, business owner

“Local government is on people's doorsteps. If people care about clean water, safe streets, public health and recreation, then they should care about local government.”

Sarah Lucas stood for a community board role because she believes local government can have a huge impact on the economic and wellbeing aspects of communities.

For Sarah, the most satisfying part of her role is ensuring that the community's voice is heard during important decisions. It's a responsibility she values, making sure every perspective is taken into account.

She also has a unique perspective on infrastructure and resilience, thanks to previous experience as a child protection social worker and project coordinator in mental health, and exposure to developing countries and conflict zones.

Beyond her involvement in local government, Sarah is a busy mum of three and runs a sustainability-focused business. In her free time, she enjoys mountain biking, hiking, swimming, and coaching at the surf club. Living in New Plymouth near the Taranaki Maunga, Sarah cherishes her rohe and community.

Sarah strongly believes in strengthening support for community boards, promoting greater civic engagement, and establishing partnerships that uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to elevate the effectiveness of local government.

To Sarah, effective leaders in local government share qualities like empathy, active listening, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
