Ben Bell

Mayor, entrepreneur, mountain biker, skier

“I love the attitude of my community, which is to just get on with it.”

Before stepping into the world of local government, Ben Bell ran his own software development company, collaborating with both startups and government agencies. Those early experiences sparked a desire to give back to his community. It didn't take long for him to realise that local government was his calling.

To Ben, the most satisfying aspect of local government, even if it might sound like a cliché, is witnessing the community's accomplishments. Whether he's attending 50-year service award ceremonies or high school prize-giving events, he remains in awe of what his community can achieve.

For him, the heart of local government's importance lies in its capacity to empower communities to take charge of their own destinies. It's about having a say in where you live and actively participating in your community's growth.

In his vision for a more effective local government, Ben emphasises the significance of increased engagement, especially from younger people. He sees sustainable funding and stronger collaboration with central government as crucial components for achieving effective governance.

Outside of work, Ben's love of everything active draws him to the gym, mountain biking, and skiing — depending on the weather, of course.
