Dr Mike Reid

Principal Advisor, local democracy advocate, musician, rower

I hope to play a small role in strengthening NZ’s system of local democracy and growing civic participation.”

Mike Reid is an ardent advocate for empowering communities and promoting local governance. He joined the LGNZ team in 1996 after embarking on a career in the non-governmental sector, primarily focusing on development education. Over time, his role evolved into providing strategic advice and guidance to various community organisations. Mike loves the chance to work with inspiring people who are committed to making their communities better places to live.

At LGNZ, Mike aims to play a small but pivotal role in strengthening New Zealand's local democracy. Notable achievements include contributions to LGNZ's work on localism, local governance, such as the LGNZ standing orders and Code of Conduct templates, and elections research.

Beyond work, Mike can be found spending time restoring a wetland in Otaki, walking his family's new puppy, indoor rowing, and playing the violin and viola.
