“I enjoy challenging the ‘this is the way we've always done it mindset.”

Doug Leeder boasts an impressive track record in the world of corporate governance, wielding expertise in mergers, acquisitions, and overseeing sizable capital projects. His local government journey includes four terms in corporate governance at the Ōpōtiki District Council, and since 2013, he's held the mantle of Chair at the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. A man of many hats, Doug also runs a farm and holds a corporate governance role for a listed company.

Doug offers a refreshing perspective on local government, aiming to challenge the "this is the way we've always done it" mentality for the better. He champions values like accessibility, empathy, and the courage to make tough calls while acting as a prudent steward of the community’s hard-earned resources.

According to Doug, the recipe for an improved local government involves preparedness, a keen grasp of fiduciary responsibilities, and a knack for cultivating strategic partnerships with central government.

When the work hat is off, Doug indulges in farm life, fishing escapades, and hitting the open road on his beloved motorbike. He holds a deep affection for the Bay's climate, treasures his vibrant community, and the progressive Iwi and Hapu relationships in Eastern Bay of Plenty.
